About the Writer - Emma Hinds
Emma Hinds is a Queer writer and mental health advocate living and working in the North West of England. Her writing interests are stories about previously unheard queer narratives, particularly from historically patriarchal or religious settings, popular theology, and stories that chime with her own experience of living openly with a mental health diagnosis.
Emma graduated with a Masters in Creative Writing from the University of St Andrews in 2014 with an existing publication in a popular theology book, Tarantino and Theology in 2015. She then began focusing on her interest in theatrical writing with her first play, Finding Alice, supported to a performance by both the ACE funded Chosen Words script development project by Theatre by Numbers in 2015 and by ADP theatre company in 2016 with a north-west tour. (Lowry Studio, Oldham Colesium, the Studio Widnes). Her short pieces about the struggles of mental health, The Diagnosis (The Best of Bolton, Octagon Theatre) and Boundaries (Secondary School Partnership, Oldham Colesium Theatre) were performed throughout 2017-18, and in 2018, Emma went back into a creative partnership with the founder of the Chosen Words project, Charlie Mortimer, for script development and theatrical experiment process at Edge Hill University, ending with the production of The Boundary. This historical, queer play set in a religious community was performed at The Rose theatre in 2018 and her feminist short play Red Women was performed at Hope Mill Theatre’s Cottonopolis in 2018.
Since then, Emma has been interested in re-examining theology and the arts inside faith communities like the one she grew up in. Since becoming part of the all-inclusive LGBTQ+ religious community of St. Nicholas church in Burnage, Emma has been working alongside the poet and Anglican Deacon, Reverend Rachel Mann, to explore the intersection of religion and art. Her book, Ineffable Love: Exploring Christian themes in Good Omens was published with DLT Publications in April 2020 and her newest play, Pure has been mentored by Rev Rachel Mann, is an exploration of personal spiritual and sexual trauma inside the Church.
Emma was also longlisted for the WriteNow Penguin Random House scheme in 2018 and Longlisted for the Mslexia novel award in 2020.
